An online marketplace (or online ecommerce market place) is a type of ecommerce site where product and inventory information is provided by multiple third parties, whereas transactions are processed by the marketplace operator.
Online marketplaces, where consumers can shop online from a variety of merchants in one place, have become an integral part of many eCommerce sellers’ businesses. Sales by sellers on the two biggest marketplaces, Amazon and eBay, accounted for about 27% of North American online retail sales.
Marketplaces represent an easy way for smaller merchants to compete in a competitive retail landscape. But, large retailers can also take advantage of marketplaces. Each can benefit from selling on marketplaces
Well known marketplaces are: Amazon, Etsy, eBay, AirBnB, Alibaba en Rakuten
